Yaz and Yasmin History

Yaz, which was officially approved by the FDA in 2006, and Yasmin, which was approved in 2001, are oral contraceptives.  The drugs combine estrogen and a fourth generation progestin to prevent pregnancy. They are also used to treat certain types of moderate acne in women and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

How Does Yaz Cause Blood Clots, Pulmonary Embolism, And Strokes?

Many Yaz and Yasmin specialists feel that the new fourth generation progestin component of the drug is more dangerous than the progestin used in comparable birth control medication.

Different Contraceptives

Yaz and Yasmin are different because they are combination oral contraceptives.  They contain both estrogen and progestin hormones to prevent pregnancy. The difference between Yaz and Yasmin is the amount of the estrogen the drug contains. Yaz includes a dose of 20 mcg while Yasmin contains a higher dose of 30 mcg ethinyl estradiol.

Yaz is also a different contraceptive because it is taken on a 24/4 day cycle instead of the usual 21/7 day cycle. This refers to the drug’s different dosing schedule.  Women who take Yaz ingest active pills for three extra days and inactive pills for three fewer days.  This has nothing to do with the lawsuits.
