Baby Carriers Under Product Recall After Injuries

Playtex Issues Product Recall for Baby Carriers After Injury Reports

baby carrierPlaytex Products, based in Dover, Delaware, has issued a product recall for 341,000 of its Hip Hammock baby carriers after reports of the device breaking, and some injuries.

According to customer complaints, the waist and shoulder straps can break, which poses a falling hazard to the child. The company has received 87 reports to date of the buckles cracking or breaking, causing the infant to fall out of the device. Two children were reported injured because of the faulty device, and one baby required emergency room treatment.

The Hip Hammock was designed to strap the baby or infant to the caregiver’s body at the hip, providing comfort to the child and easy transport for the caregiver. The item is made from a soft fabric, and intended for use for babies between 15 and 35 lbs. All model numbers are under product recall; model numbers are 05300, 05301, 05302, 05306, 05307 and 05308, and the product numbers can be found sewn into the inside panel below the instructions for use.

The Hip Hammocks were originally sold at retail outlets Burlington Coat Factory, Target, Walmart, and online at Amazon.com, among other baby product retailers. Items were sold between June 2004 and December 2008 in the US, and until January 2010 in Canada.

Consumers should immediately stop using the product and follow instructions for a refund. Concerned customers can contact Playtex about the product recall at (800) 522-8230 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.

Defective Product Recalls and Personal Injury in South Carolina

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products, and improper or delayed product recalls. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety, such as issuing product recalls in a timely fashion. Although any product could be subject to a recall due to improper testing, some of the most common product recalls are for automobiles and automotive parts, drugs and medical devices, and children’s toys.

There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue product recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers.
