Baby Einstein Manufacturer Issues Product Recall After Injuries

babyeinsteinManufacturer Issues Product Recall for Baby Einstein After Children Suffer Bruising, Skull Fractures

Kids II has issued a voluntary product recall for 400,000 Baby Einstein “Musical Motion Activity Jumper” play sets in the United States and Canada, after the company received almost 100 complaints about the product causing injury to children who use it.

Of the personal injury incidents reported, 61 cases involved head injuries that ranged from bruises to lacerations to skull fractures. The head injuries were reportedly caused by a faulty spring in the yellow sun attachment, which is one of the many toys attached to the product’s base.

Reportedly, one 7-month-old child sustained a skull fracture, an adult chipped a tooth, and several other consumers have reported face lacerations and bruises.

According to a notice issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the yellow sun “can rebound with force and injure the infant, posing an impact hazard.”

“Every day, Kids II strives to create the best, most reliable products for you and your child,” the company said in a statement.

The product has been carried by various retailers including Amazon.com and Toys R Us. Included in the product recall are play sets under model number “90564,” which can be found on a tag attached to the seat’s underside. The affected products were manufactured prior to November, 2011 and contain the following date codes: OD0, OE0, OF0, OG0, OH0, OI0, OJ0, OK0, OL0, OA1, OB1, OC1, OD1, OE1, OF1, OG1, OH1, OI1, OJ1 and OK1.

“Some people who have [the jumper] at home and have never had a problem were actually upset that it’s being recalled, which is surprising because I think in general most parents would rather be safe than sorry. Then we had some people saying they did have problems. One person said the sun hit her son in the face a few times,” said Elena Mauer, deputy editor of TheBump.com.

“I think everyone wants the safest situation for their child,” Mauer added. “You watch babies so closely, but they still can get into so much trouble.”

The company urges consumers in its product recall notice to immediately stop using the Baby Einstein set, and contact Kids II for a replacement attachment. The company can be contacted through their website, Kids II, or CPSC’s website. Consumers can also call toll-free at (877) 325-7056 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.

Defective Product Recalls and Personal Injury in South Carolina

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products, and improper or delayed product recalls. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety, such as issuing product recalls in a timely fashion. Although any product could be subject to a recall due to improper testing, some of the most common product recalls are for automobiles and automotive parts, drugs and medical devices, and children’s toys.

There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue product recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers.
