Blue Cheese Under Food Recall Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

Blue Cheese Under Scrutiny in Food Recall Because of Possible Salmonella Contamination

blue cheeseFlat Creek Farm & Dairy of Swainsboro, Georgia, has issued a food recall for 200 pounds of Heavenly Blue Cheese because of a potential contamination with Salmonella enteritidis.

Flat Creek stated that as of November 27th, 90% of the product under the food recall had been collected and destroyed. No illnesses have been associated with the salmonella food recall so far.

Heavenly Blue Cheese is distributed through some retail stores in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. The company also received three online orders for the cheese, and the company says that those consumers have been notified of the food recall as well. The product is packaged in clear plastic, and is sold in sizes ranging from ½ lb, to a whole wheel. The product code specifically listed under the food recall is 130912XHB, and can be found on the front of the package.

The food recall was issued because of a routine safety inspection that samples foods, conducted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The sampling revealed that the finished products were contaminated with salmonella. The company has reported that they found the source of the contamination and have eliminated the issue in future batches.

Salmonella enteritidis can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people who have weakened immune systems, such as children or elderly adults. Healthy individuals could suffer short-term side effects from the organism, including fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and/or diarrhea. Long-term complications of this salmonella infection can include arthritis.

Food Recall Notice May or May Not Be In Time to Stop Contagion

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products, foods, and medications have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers. The USDA monitors food safety and potential contamination. However, these agencies act only after they hear reports of potential contamination, either from the manufacturer, or from consumers. By the time consumer reports of illness or injury make their way to these federal agencies, it may be too late to stop harm done with a product or food recall.

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products and foods. A personal injury lawyer can help you with an injury you may receive. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, and other defective products such as toys, cars, food, medication, and automotive parts.
