CPSC Focuses on Pool Safety and Drowning Prevention

Avoiding Drowning Related Accidents

As the school year ends and summer begins, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is again advising parents of the importance of pool safety in the prevention of drowning deaths in children.

The CPSC has again launched their Pool Safety: Simple Steps Saves Lives  campaign focusing on those at most risk for drowning. The CPSC found that children under 5 years of age encompass 75 percent of drowning deaths in children.  The study also found African American and Hispanic children between the ages of 5 and 14 drown at higher rates than white children.

Chairwoman and former South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Inez Tenenbaum said:

“CPSC’s Pool Safety campaign has worked to prevent countless drownings, and we will continue to work to save even more lives this year … Drowning is still the leading cause of unintentional deaths with children younger than 5. That’s why the Pool Safely campaign is encouraging all parents and caregivers of children, especially African American and Hispanic children, to help them learn to swim and to take water safety seriously.”

The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Pool Safety report emphasizes key points in the prevention of drowning deaths  in children, including:

  • Have the appropriate equipment in and around the pool area
  • Stay close, be alert, and watch children in and around the pool
  • Learn and practice water safety skills
