Chrysler Issues Vehicle Recall for Nearly 300,000 Cars

Safety Concern Prompts Chrysler to Issue Vehicle Recall on Trucks and SUVs

Chrysler is issuing a vehicle recall for 278,222 pickup trucks and SUVs due to a problem with the rear axle.

Reportedly, the rear axle of some Chrysler Dodge Ram 1500 pickups, model years 2009 through 2012, and some Chrysler Dodge Dakota pickups in model years 2009 to 2011, can lock up unexpectedly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that a nut in the axle can come loose and fall off due to a missing adhesive patch. When that happens, drivers can lose control when the axle locks up.

Chrysler included Aspens and Durango SUVs from 2009 in the recall as well.

Starting in March 2013, Chrysler will begin installing a retainer to keep the nut in place.

Last October, the automotive manufacturer had to issue a vehicle recall for 44,000 Rams and Dakotas that had the same problem.

Chrysler faces heavy competition from both Ford and General Motors, especially after issuing vehicle recall notices for the same problem twice. Chrysler’s Dodge Ram 1500 model pickup was named both North American Truck of the Year and Motor Trend Truck of the Year, the two most coveted awards for pickups.

Chrysler Also Issues Vehicle Recall Notice for Sports Cars

In a separate vehicle recall notice sent to the NHTSA, Chrysler said it would recall 4,278 Dodge Viper sports cars from model years 2003 and 2004. The recall was issued because a problem with a circuit board could prevent the vehicle’s airbag from inflating properly.

This vehicle recall is also the second because of a similar problem. Chrysler initially issued a vehicle recall for the same airbag concern in Jeep Liberty and Jeep Grand Cherokee models.

Vehicle owners will be notified of the vehicle recall notice in the coming weeks, and then they can go to a local Chrysler dealership for repairs. Customer can also call Chrysler now at 1-800-247-9753 for more information.
