Company Issues Food Recall for More Salads, Other Foods, for Listeria Contamination

Garden Fresh Expands Food Recall on Salads, Chicken, and Ham Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

listeria contaminationGarden Fresh Foods, based in Milwaukee, WI, is expanding a food recall issued in August to almost 7,000 pounds of ready-to-eat food.

The food recall, because of possible listeria contamination, has been expanded to cover 6,694 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken and ham products, including Weis Wonder Chicken Salad and Weis Ham Salad. The recalled products bear the numbers “EST. 17256” or “Est. P-17256” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items, now part of the expanded food recall, were produced between October 10 and October 15, 2013. They have been distributed through retail and food service establishments nationwide.

The additional items are part of a 19,054 food recall from September 25th.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) conducted a safety assessment at the Garden Fresh facility in Milwaukee after the huge food recall in September. Microbial testing and other findings revealed that another product was potentially contaminated with listeria.

Last month’s Garden Fresh food recall included egg salads, coleslaw, spinach and dill dips, and some other ready-to-eat foods.

“The products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes-fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the Food and Drug Administration. “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

So far, the FDA, CDC, and the company have uncovered any cases of illness related to listeria, which is called listeriosis.

Contaminated Food Recall Notices Are One Step to Ensure Consumer Safety

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries or illnesses from defective products, including food and prescription medications. A defective product lawyer can help you with an injury you may receive. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety, including timely health and safety recalls, such as drug and food recalls.

There are a number of reasons that defective foods and products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation
