DePuy Hip Recall Q&A

DePuy Hip Replacement Recall Questions and Answers

How dangerous are the defective hips?

Johnson & Johnson/DePuy Orthopaedics’ ASR Hip Resurfacing System and ASR XL Acetabular System were recalled by the manufacturers on August 8, 2010, because of increasing evidence that the devices have higher-than-expected early failure rates.

The devices, meant to last around fifteen years, have a 12-13 percent failure rate within the first couple years of implantation. This failure rate is nearly double the industry average. Somedoctors believe that the ASR hip implant has a basic design flaw that makes it difficult to implant.

Only by receiving a comprehensive medical diagnosis can you be sure that you are not in danger. This might include returning for an annual assessment to make sure any ASR device you’ve had implanted keeps functioning safely. During your initial doctor’s visit, you can expect to have a blood test to measure the level of microscopic metal pieces surrounding your hip. If you have elevated metal particle levels, this could be a sign that your ASR hip is failing.

What does Johnson & Johnson say about the recall?

On August 26, 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, issued a voluntary recall of its ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System. In doing so, they basically admitted that they had manufactured and sold hip replacement units that stop working at a rate much higher than industry standards, requiring many patients to need a procedure to remove and replace the defective, unsafe units.

On its Web site, DePuy states that it “…intends to cover reasonable and customary costs of testing and treatment if you need services, including revision surgery if it is necessary, associated with the recall of ASR.”
