Father’s Day Safety Tips for Every Occasion

Father’s Day weekend is fast approaching, and while you’re busy purchasing a great Father’s Day gift and planning the perfect day for Dad, keep in mind these important Father’s Day safety tips!

Grilling Safety

New grills are one of the most popular gifts for Father’s Day. With more Americans lighting their grills than ever before, it’s important to remember that a fun cookout is a safe cookout.  So, as you grill, keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Check the tubes that lead into the burner for any blockage from insects, spiders, or food grease. Use a pipe cleaner or wire to clear the blockage and push it through to the main part of the burner.
  • Keep lighted cigarettes, matches, or open flames away from a leaking grill.
  • Grills should only be used outdoors and at least 10 feet away from a house or any building.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area by declaring a 3-foot “kid-free” safety zone around the grill.
  • For charcoal grill lovers, if you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the lit fire.

Weather Safety

On Father’s Day, many of our Dads will be golfing, fishing, camping, or floating on the lake. Follow these weather safety tips to stay safe from the elements.

  • Lightning: Mixing warm weather, wide-open spaces, and metal clubs make golfing a potentially deadly lightning risk. Stay away from ponds, lakes, and other open water areas, don’t stand under lone trees, and don’t use your golf clubs.
  • Heat: Heat-related illnesses are responsible for thousands of hospital trips every year. If you’re out on the barren golf course or exposed to the sun on the lake, make sure you’re staying hydrated and wearing plenty of sunscreens.
  • Check the forecast: Check your local forecast before planning a big day outdoors. If the forecast calls for rain or thunderstorms, postpone the party for a few days. If the forecast calls for extreme heat, make sure you have enough water and shelter nearby to get you through the hot day.

Pool SafetySafety tips

Father’s Day is often a day for families to get together and celebrate with a cookout or backyard barbeque. Between all of the people and chaos, it’s important to remember these basic pool safety tips for June fun.

  • Educate guests about the pool, such as depth markings, lighting, diving board location, surface, and time for use.
  • Pool drains should have safety covers that prevent hair from getting trapped in the drain, trapping a person underwater.
  • Learn to perform C.P.R. on children and adults, and take a refresher on your C.P.R. skills regularly.
