Father’s Day Safety Tips

The Strom Law Firm Wishes Everyone A Happy, Safe Father’s Day!

father's day

This year, Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 19th, and many families are beginning to prepare for traditional celebrations,  including outdoor grilling and barbecuing, pool parties, and boating trips. The personal injury attorneys at the Strom Law Firm love to celebrate Father’s Day too, and we’d like to offer a few tips on celebrating Dad’s in style and safety.

Father’s Day Grilling and Barbeque Safety Tips

  • Always read the owner’s manual for your grill or barbeque for brand-specific safety tips.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher on hand.
  • Never leave the grill or barbeque unattended while it is in use.
  • Check the tubes that lead into the burner for any blockage from insects, spiders, or food grease. Use a pipe cleaner or wire to clear blockage and push it through to the main part of the burner.
  • Keep lighted cigarettes, matches, or open flames away from a leaking grill.
  • Grills should only be used outdoors and at least 10 feet away from a house or any building.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area by declaring a 3-foot “kid-free” safety zone around the grill.
  • Be sure to keep the grill or barbeque off dry grass or leaves.
  • For charcoal grill lovers, if you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the lit fire.
  • Never attempt to move a hot grill.
  • Allow ashes to completely cool before disposing of them. Wrap ashes in heavy-duty aluminum foil and put them in a non-combustible container.
  • When cooking on the grill or barbeque, use tongs, spatulas, and gloves to prevent your hands from being burnt.

Father’s Day Food Safety Tips

  • When purchasing meat, fish, or poultry, make sure the packaging is intact, and check the “sell-by” or “use-by” date. Wrap animal products in plastic bags to ensure any juices from the raw meat do not leak on other food.
  • Put raw animal products into the refrigerator immediately after arriving home.
  • Use a separate cutting board for poultry, meat, and fish items.
  • Wash hands between handling raw meat, poultry, and fish, and other food items.
  • Use a thermometer to make sure meat is fully cooked to prevent salmonella or e. Coli transmission.
  • If concerned about food manufacturing safety, check USDA.gov for food recall information. The Strom Law Firm Personal Injury Attorneys also keep up to date with drug, product, and food recalls.

Father’s Day Boating Safety Tips

  • Always wear a life jacket while on a boat
  • Keep a small medical kit on board to treat scrapes or cuts. You may also consider taking a CPR class for all summer activities.
  • Check the weather before participating in outdoor activities. Avoid outdoor events such as pool parties or boating trips if there is a thunder or lightning storm, or other severe weather alert.
  • Boat shoes can help prevent slip and fall injuries on boats and docks
  • Apply sunscreen and monitor your skin for sunburns throughout the day
  • Keep your speed under control. Driving a boat too fast can cause a serious boating accident
  • Never drink while piloting a boat. BUI is a serious charge, just like DUI.
