Food Recall Expanded Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

Salads, Slaws, and Dips Under Expanded Food Recall Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

listeria contamination
Several states are seeing an expanded food recall for Garden-Fresh Foods salads, slaws, and dips, due to a possible listeria infection, according to the manufacturer.

The food recall began earlier in September with some of the manufacturer’s potato, macaroni, and tuna salads, but has now been expanded to a wide range of foods, from salads to baked beans, coleslaw, salmon and spinach dips, pastas, ham spreads, and salsas. Garden-Fresh sold potentially-contaminated products not only under their own name, but under brand names like Weis, Spartan, Portillo, Archer Farms, and D’Amico. The full list is available at the FDA’s website here.

The recalled Garden-Fresh products were available in 14 states, including Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, Texas, Florida, Massachusetts, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and California.

Listeria can cause a potentially fatal infection in those with compromised immune systems such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children. According to the CDC, there were 1,651 cases of listeriosis nationally between 2009 and 2011 – the infection was fatal in 21% of the reported cases.

So far, according to the FDA and Garden-Fresh Foods, there have been no reported cases of listeriosis associated with the food recall.

The company has been struggling for a few months with potential listeria contamination of their products. In July and August, Garden-Fresh issued two food recalls related to onions used in their products, which were subject to a separate listeria contamination recall.

Concerned consumers can contact their local health department about the food recall, or take the product back to the store where they purchased it for a refund, according to Garden-Fresh Foods.

Contaminated Food Recall Notices Are One Step to Ensure Consumer Safety

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products have been recalled because they are defective, contaminated, or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers.

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries or illnesses from defective products. A defective product lawyer can help you with an injury you may receive. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, and other defective products such as toys, cars and automotive parts.

There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation
