A man who escaped into Allendale County, SC last year pled guilty on Monday to 27 South Carolina criminal charges, and was sentenced to decades in prison.
38-year-old Perry Sullivan of Bowersville, GA apologized in court for his escape last August. “I’d just like to apologize to that officer for what I did to him,” Sullivan said.On August 18th, 2011, Sullivan was being transported from Colleton County, SC back to Stephens County, GA, after he had been put in jail for an alleged burglary. The transport pulled over in Allensdale, SC for lunch, where Sullivan faked a seizure, slipped out of his handcuffs, beat the deputy escorting him, took the 40 caliber Glock off the officer, and the patrol car.

Man-Hunt Leads to South Carolina Criminal Charges for Georgia Man

The hunt for Sullivan lasted 3 days, and involved several agencies and 150 people. Officers from Kershaw County, Allendale County, SLED, Jasper County, Hampton County, Fairfax PD, Allendale PD, Estill PD, DNR, Highway Patrol and Colleton County were working to find Sullivan.

During the manhunt, Sullivan threatened several people with the handgun, and carjacked two more cars, in his attempt to get away.

“People were petrified. The entire community was on high alert. The entire community was afraid,” said Solicitor Duffie Stone of the State of South Carolina 14th Judicial Circuit.

Sullivan broke into a private home to hopefully find food and a change of clothes. He tried to steal several cars on the property, and when none of them worked, attempted to carjack a woman named Gloria Duncan, who sped off unharmed but testified against Sullivan in court. He also broke into a peanut farm and stole a truck, ditching the car later just before a law enforcement checkpoint. Finally, he robbed a convenience store at gunpoint and stole a Blue Ford Explorer from the parking lot – the car eventually led to his capture.

He was captured almost by accident by Williston Police Officer Joey Patsourakos, who happened to be camping nearby with his family. That morning, he heard on his police scanner that the Ford Explorer had been stolen. “I went and got my M4. Went down SC-641 and set up and just basically blocked the road and waited for him to come to me if he was going to come or if he wasn’t. I didn’t know. But everything worked out the way it did, and he did come that direction, and I was able to get him off the street,” Patsourakos said.

Sullivan said that, at that point, he knew the escape was over and surrendered himself to Patsourakos without incident.

In court on Monday, Sullivan said his intentions were not deadly. “Like I said, I was just by myself. I didn’t know where I was. I didn’t want to hurt nobody. The whole time that gun was a weight on me that I didn’t want,” he said.

His family also testified in court, saying that the fact that Sullivan never actually fired the gun showed he had a kind heart.

Judge Kinard took a much harder stance on Sullivan. The judge stated that, although the man did not have a violent past, he had a history of DUIs, possession of marijuana, and theft. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison with no parole.
