GoDaddy Outage Took Out Strom Law Firm

If you were trying to access Strom Law Firm’s site on Monday, chances are you did not get through because of an outage resulting from a GoDaddy hack.

GoDaddy is an internet registrar that hosts more than 5 million websites and email accounts, many of which belong to small businesses, like Strom Law Firm.

Hacked

According to Fox News, the outage resulted from the work of hacker.

Anup Ghosh, chief scientist at Invincea, a security company, described the outage as a distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attack. Regarding the DDoS attack Ghosh stated, “This yet another example of how anyone with an agenda can take down large portions of the Internet with really cheap, off-the-shelf tools.”

So who was behind the attack? Twitter user Anonymous Own3r claimed responsibility for the attack. In a Tweet filled with broken English and typos Anonymous Own3r said, “I’m taking godaddy down bacause well i’d like to test how the cyber security is safe and for more reasons that i can not talk now.”

The hacker also said that he was not part a hacking collective that goes by a similar name. The hacker tweeted, “It is no Anonymous collective it’s only me. Don’t use Anonymous collective name on it, just my name.”

How Did the Hack Occur?

The outage occurred using a DDoS attack. A DDoS attack occurs when a server is flooded with communication making the server unable to keep up. A DDoS attack can utilize as few as 50 computers.

“Anyone can be hacked, the size of the company has no bearing,” Ghosh stated.

Ghosh stated that GoDaddy and similar infrastructures must increase security and other measures to make them less vulnerable to attacks. According to Ghosh, when the hackers took down the servers at just a single key service provider, they took down a lot more properties and affected a lot more businesses, including Ghosh’s business.

Ghosh’s company, Invincea is a GoDaddy customer. In a statement to his customer’s Monday afternoon, Ghosh said, “Our website is down, any emails sent to Invincea aren’t going to make it.”

GoDaddy worked throughout the day Monday to restore service to their customers. In a Tweet the company said they were “working feverishly” to resolve the situation and restore service.

The company utilized Twitter throughout the afternoon to keep customers up to date on what was going on in regards to the matter stating in one Tweet, “We’re aware of the trouble people are having with our site. We’re working on it.”

A later Tweet read, “Update: Still working on it, but we’re making progress. Some service has already been restored. Stick with us.”

The problem was finally resolved late Monday afternoon and service was restored to all of GoDaddy’s customers including Strom Law Firm.
