GPS Manufacturer Could Be Liable for Personal Injury in Bus Accident

Massachusetts Plaintiffs File Personal Injury Lawsuit Against GPS Manufacturer for Bus Accident

bus accidentA bus accident in Massachusetts has led about a dozen plaintiffs to file personal injury lawsuits alleging that the manufacturer of the bus’s GPS gave the driver wrong directions, which led to the dangerous crash.

Several residents of Eleven Bucks County were injured in 2013 when a charter bus were headed back to Pennsylvania after a daytrip to Harvard University. The bus driver used a popular GPS tracker manufactured by TomTom USA and Garmin International, which improperly routed the bus to a height-restricted road which caused the charter bus to strike an overpass, injuring several of the passengers.

On Friday, January 23rd, the 11 plaintiffs filed a $15 million personal injury lawsuit in Boston, claiming that it is the responsibility of the GPS manufacturers to warn about height restrictions. “GPS did not provide any warning on height restrictions, nor did it provide a warning that the device should not be used in commercial vehicle,” said an attorney for one of the young plaintiffs, who was paralyzed by the accident.

The personal injury lawsuit also claims that “it is a well-known fact” that the lack of warning from GPS trackers in vehicles has caused “numerous bridge strikes throughout the United States.”

“We were surprised to learn there were over 200 of these bridge hits in New York State alone,” the plaintiff’s attorney said.

The reality is that car and bus accidents occur on a daily basis in South Carolina and often lead to disastrous results. Personal injury can be caused by defective vehicles, wrong directions, distracted driving, DUI from drugs or alcohol, or poorly-maintained roads. Even minor accidents can lead to catastropic injuries, costly medical bills, lost wages, permanent disability, and even wrongful death.

If a loved one dies as a result of the negligence, reckless, or intentional conduct of another, you may be entitled to bring a claim for wrongful death. A wrongful death lawsuit asserts a claim against a person who can be held legally responsible for a death.  Surviving family members may be entitled to damages; money that can help with the expenses caused by the loss of their loved one.
