Hyundai and Kia Issue a Airbag Recall Notice for 1.7 Million Cars

Problems with Air Bag Led Hyundai and Kia to Issue Airbag Recall

The Hyundai Motor Corporation and its affiliate, Kia Motors Corp, have issued an airbag recall notice that covers 1.7 million cars, including the best-selling Elantra.

According to Hyundai, the problem is with a faulty switch that can cause a variety of issues. In 1.1 million automobiles in the airbag recall notice, the brake light switches could malfunction. The same potential problem could also result in the cruise control not disengaging, which can cause a crash. Additionally, the faulty switch could lead to intermittent operation of the start button – not necessarily fatal, but damaging for the vehicle nonetheless. As if that were not enough, the defect could prevent the gear shifter from moving out of the parked position, or the electronic stability control malfunction light could illuminate.

The airbag recall includes the model year 2007-2009 Hyundai Accents and Tuscons, 2007-2010 Elantras, 2007-2011 Santa Fes, 2008-2009 Veracruzes, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupes, and 2011 Sonatas. Kia recalls 623,658 vehicles for the same electronic defect; their vehicle recall notice includes the model year 2007-2010 Rondos and Sportages, 2007-2011 Sorentos, 2007 Sedonas, 2010-2011 Souls, and 2011 Optimas.

Hyundai added, in one of its three filings with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), that they were also issuing the vehicle recall to fix side-curtain airbag problems. The notice came after the NHTSA said last year they would open an investigation into Hyundai’s airbag problem, after receiving numerous consumer complaints.

“We are working hard to solve the problem as quickly as possible,” Hyundai said in an e-mailed response to Bloomberg’s query.

Under the recall, Kia and Hyundai will replace the stop lamp switches for free.

The Strom Law Firm Can Help with Airbag Defective Products and Airbag Recall Cases

General Motors filed for bankruptcy in 2009, and since then has become a leaner, stronger company. However, this recall notice could make consumers wonder if GM’s recovery is real. Although it is a small recall, it affects several popular vehicles, and the engine problems are potentially deadly.

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers.
