IKEA Issues Product Recall for Two Children’s Beds

ikea product recallTwo Models of Children’s Beds Under IKEA Product Recall

The popular Swedish furniture company IKEA has issued a voluntary product recall for two models of children’s beds that could cause laceration injury.

The KRITTER and SNIGLAR junior beds reportedly have a metal rod in the side rail of the bed that could break, exposing hazardous sharp edges and presenting a possible laceration hazard.

While the company has received complaints of the bed rails breaking, they have not received any notifications of personal injury. However, they say the product recall is very serious and recommend anyone with an Ikea junior bed check to see if they have one of the recalled products.

KRITTER junior beds with date stamp (YYWW) from 1114 to 1322 and SNIGLAR junior beds with date stamp from 1114 to 1318 are the only two models affected by the product recall. The date stamp can be found either on the headboard, or the underside of the bed. Model number for KRITTER is 600.904.70 and for SNIGLAR 500.871.66, supplier number for KRITTER is 15361 and for SNIGLAR 19740 or 18157, are printed on the same label.

The beds were sold exclusively at IKEA, from 2005 to May 2013. They were sold at IKEA stores across the globe, so all countries, including the United States and Canada, are affected by the product recall.

About 22,000 beds in the US and 18,000 in Canada could be affected by the product recall. The recall does not affect any other IKEA beds.

Consumers can call IKEA’s customer service line at 888-966-4532 and receive a free repair kit if they have one of the affected models. The kit includes a replacement rod, tools, and instruction sheet.

Defective Product Recalls and Personal Injury in South Carolina

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products, and improper or delayed product recalls. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety, such as issuing product recalls in a timely fashion. Although any product could be subject to a recall due to improper testing, some of the most common product recalls are for automobiles and automotive parts, drugs and medical devices, and children’s toys.

There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue product recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers.

Consumers that have been harmed by defective products such as drugs, medical devices, or other products, may be eligible to receive legal remedies. Such legal remedies, or damages, may include compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, loss of physical capacity, pain, suffering, and mental anguish. Punitive damages are also available in many jurisdictions to punish defendants in those cases involving particularly egregious conduct which demonstrates a reckless or wanton disregard for the safety of the public.
