More Listeria Food Recalls Issued

Safeway Issues Voluntary Food Recall for Several Deli Products

deliOn Wednesday, October 30th, Safeway issued a voluntary food recall for several products that contained ingredients supplied to Taylor Farms by Reser’s Fine Foods, which may be contaminated with listeria.

The company said that the food recall is in cooperation with Reser’s Fine Foods and Taylor Farms. The items are deli products and are displayed behind glass in a full-service deli or in self-service coolers.

There are no confirmed listeria-related illnesses having to do with the contamination.

Last week, Taylor Farms issued a food recall for broccoli salad kits, which it sold to several retail food stores across the country. The food supplier is now saying that the salad dressing, which could have been contaminated with listeria, was sold to the company by Reser’s Fine Foods, which recently issued a voluntary food recall for 22,800 lbs of meat which could have been contaminated with listeria.

Safeway advises that customers who purchased the products discard them immediately or return them for a full refund. Concerned consumers can contact Safeway for more information about the food recall at 1-866-SAFEWAY, 24 hours a day.

Delaware School Districts Issue Food Recall

The Delaware Division of Public Health is advising residents of a voluntary food recall involving the same ready-to-eat deli items supplied by Reser’s Fine Foods to Taylor Farms.

Reportedly, four school districts in the state received some of the recalled items. However, no reported illnesses due to listeria have been reported in any of the schools.

Beebe Medical Center also received the recalled product. The schools and the medical facility are currently disposing of the potentially-contaminated food.

Listeria can cause a potentially fatal infection in those with compromised immune systems such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children. People with stronger immune systems could experience symptoms such as headache, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. According to the CDC, there were 1,651 cases of listeriosis nationally between 2009 and 2011 – the infection was fatal in 21% of the reported cases.

The recall of Reser’s Fine Foods items includes 450 ready-to-eat products, including potato salad, coleslaw, fruit parfaits, and dips. A full list of recalled food products can be found at the FDA’s website here.
