Manufacturer Issues Food Recall for Uninspected Meat and Poultry Products

Siberoni Issues Food Recall for “Pelmeni” After Discovering Product Was Not Inspected

food recall
Siberoni, an Oregon-based manufacturer, has issued a food recall for 169,655 pounds of Eastern European-style frozen meat and poultry ravioli called “pelmeni,” which the company says were produced without inspection from the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) as required by federal law.

The food recall covers the following products:

  • 1 lb. packages, in 40-pound cases, of “Siberoni” brand Chicken Pelmeni
  • 1 lb. packages, in 40-pound cases, of “Siberoni” brand Beef Pelmeni
  • 1 lb. packages, in 40-pound cases, of “Siberoni” brand Beef and Pork Pelmeni

The packages are marked with “33788” or “P-33788” inside a USDA mark for inspection, or potentially elsewhere on the package. The products were shipped September 6th, and were sold directly from the company’s storefronts in Oregon and Washington state.

Siberoni says there have been no reports of illness after ingesting the pelmeni.

While visiting a distributor, FSIS investigators reported that they found a food product that appeared to have been produced while under suspension. Further investigation determined that the food product was made before suspension, but without the benefit of FSIS inspection.

Consumers with questions regarding the recall should contact Siberoni at 503-335-5843 or visit the firm’s website at www.siberoni.com. Concerns about illness related to the food recall should be addressed to a doctor. The FSIS division routinely conducts inspections and food recall effectiveness checks by confirming food recalls with their customers, including restaurants. They do this to ensure that proper food safety steps are taken during food recalls, and to make certain the recalled product is no longer available to customers. Consumers can visit the FSIS website for more information on food recalls and procedures: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

Defective Products and Food Recall Notices Are One Step to Ensure Consumer Safety

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers.

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries and illnesses from defective products. A defective product lawyer can help you with an injury you may receive. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, and other defective products such as toys, cars and automotive parts.

There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation
