The Accident

According to CNN, the accident occurred Sunday, September 9 around 4:30 p.m. The officer, identified as Officer Bruce St. Laurent, was traveling on I-95 through West Palm Beach when an F 150 hit his motorcycle.

The crash left Officer St. Laurent critically injured. Following the accident, the officer was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center where he later passed away.

The accident happened near the front of the president’s motorcade. President Obama did not see the accident unfold, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney. The accident also did not involve any other vehicles in the motorcade.

The Palm Beach Sherriff’s Office is currently investigating the accident alongside the Florida Highway Patrol. Law enforcement has yet to release the identity of the pickup driver. It is unknown what, if any charges the truck driver will face.

“We didn’t lose a co-worker. We lost a friend.”

Officer St. Laurent was a 20-year veteran of the Jupiter Police Department, including 18 years as motor officer, according to Jupiter Police Chief Frank Kitzerow. St. Laurent received a 2005 award for Distinguished Service awarded by the Traffic Safety Committee of Palm Beach, CBS states.

Jupiter Police spokesman Sgt. Scott Pascarella said in statement, “We didn’t lose a co-worker. We lost a friend.” Reflecting upon his co-worker and friend, Sgt. Pascarella stated, “He would do anything for anyone.”

President Obama received notice of Officer St. Laurent’s death. In a statement issued by Carney, President Obama stated, “our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family”.
