Woman Links Mirena IUD to Miscarriages
The latest personal injury lawsuit filed against Bayer’s Mirena IUD claims that the contraception device can cause miscarriage after it is removed.
The plaintiff, Whitney, had the Mirena contraception device implanted in 2011 after she and her husband had a son. A few years later, they decided they wanted another child, so Whitney had the Mirena device removed. However, she suffered three miscarriages after the Mirena device was removed.
Consequently, Whitney has had to go to a fertility clinic for treatments, a problem she did not have when she tried to get pregnant the first time. She thinks that the Mirena IUD was the reason she had problems getting pregnant.
“Two of my miscarriages were eight weeks (the other was five weeks),” says Whitney. “They caused a lot of unwelcome stress for me and my husband, and these losses caused me to be depressed. My husband also blames Mirena and wants to find out if indeed that is the case almost as badly as me. I think he is confused more than anything.
“Knowing that Bayer does not disclose information about miscarriage makes me so angry. It isn’t right that they can take a healthy woman’s fertility away. If I knew Mirena had the slightest risk of miscarriage, I would have kept taking the birth control pill.
“And the fertility clinic is not cheap. So far we have paid over $1,000 for blood work alone, and that is just the co-pay. I am hopeful that my insurance will cover the treatment; from everything I have been told by my insurer, we will be covered. I am also booked for an ultrasound at my first appointment: it is a diagnostic work-up to determine if there is any damage or to see the cause of my infertility.”
While this side effect is terrible, the Mirena IUD can cause severe complications like organ perforation and infection. As of November this year, the FDA reports 70,072 reports of Mirena IUD failures, including 6,000 that involve organ perforation when the device migrates.
According to court documents, there are at least 408 claims against Bayer’s Mirena device filed in the Southern District Court of New York alone. There are at least 630 similar lawsuits in a court in New Jersey.

Since the Mirena IUD was originally approved for use, numerous exceptions to its use have been discovered. Bayer claimed the Mirena IUD should be used in women who have at least one child and only one sexual partner, but reportedly, some doctors in the Boston area say that the device is only safe for women who have never had children.
