NHTSA Investigating Potential Vehicle Recall for Honda Odysseys

Braking Problem Could Lead to Vehicle Recall for Honda

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating customer complaints about model year 2007 and 2008 Honda Odysseys. Reportedly, owners complain that the vehicles brake unexpectedly. This could lead to a vehicle recall of 344,000 vehicles.

The complaints are similar to those that led to a vehicle recall in March of this year for Honda and Acura model vehicles.

According to reports, the NHTSA says that they received 22 complaints from Odyssey owners claiming “that the vehicle suddenly applies the brakes by itself.”

“I was driving down the street about 40 miles per hour with my foot only on the gas pedal when all of a sudden the brakes slammed on, slowing me down rapidly,” said one owner in a complaint filed in early June. “Luckily there was nobody behind me.”

The March vehicle recall, according to Honda, was supposedly to correct a problem in the Vehicle Stability Assist, Honda’s electronic stability control system. The system is designed to sense when the front or rear of the vehicle is sliding in a direction against the steering wheel, such as in wet or icy conditions, and apply pressure to the brakes to nudge the car back on course. The previous vehicle recall covered 101,000 Honda Pilots, 60,000 Acura MDX vehicles and 21,000 Acura RLs from the 2005 model year, and about 800 2006 Acura MDX models.

There have been no crashes or injuries reported yet.

No vehicle recall has been issued yet, either from Honda or the NHTSA. The NHTSA’s inquiries into customer complaints are only a preliminary investigation. However, if you own a Honda Odyssey and you have experienced unexpected braking issues, contact the NHTSA to report the problem: Toll-Free: 1-888-327-4236 / Hearing Impaired (TTY): 1-800-424-9153.

Personal Injury Related to Delayed Vehicle Recalls

Typical causes of automobile accidents include driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, automobile defect, failed maintenance, failing to be careful, speeding, running stops signs or stop lights, failing to yield the right of way, not paying attention because of using cell phone or PDA, adjusting the radio or a DVD player, or eating while driving.

If a car accident is caused by a delayed vehicle recall, the product is considered defective.

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products. A defective product lawyer can help you with an injury you may receive. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, and other defective products such as toys, cars and automotive parts.

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from common household products that are defective. These goods usually seem harmless until an injury occurs. Some examples of defective or unsafe consumer products include: automobiles and automotive products, toys and children’s products.
