Workplace Accident Could Be the Result of OSHA Violations
An incident at a construction site led a worker to fall 15 feet and become impaled on a metal rod. Now, OSHA is investigating the workplace accident to determine if any violations could lead not only to workers comp claims, but to federal prosecution.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was formed by a bill signed into law in 1970, designed to protect workers’ rights and safety while working, especially while on dangerous job sites like construction sites or in mines. Per OSHA regulations, employers have the responsibility to provide a safe workplace, and must find and correct safety or health problems when they arise. Workers have a right to file complaints with OSHA if they feel that their employer is not creating a safe environment for employees.
The incident at the construction site on Saturday, March 7th could have been a simple accident, but OSHA is responsible for investigating workplace accidents for potential violations.
“The purpose of the inspection is to determine whether or not any workplace safety standards were violated in connection with this incident,” said U.S. Department of Labor spokesman Ted Fitzgerald. “If violations are identified, OSHA could issue citations and propose fines for the employer.”
The workplace accident victim’s condition is not known at this time, but he has, so far, survived being impaled by the steel rod.
