Pharmaceutical Company Issues Product Recall for Birth Control Pills

Manufacturer of Birth Control Pills Issues Voluntary Product Recall

Pharmaceutical manufacturer Sandoz announced on Friday, July 5th, that they were issuing a voluntary product recall for one lot of their brand-name birth control pill, Estarylla.

The Estarylla (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol) product recall was reportedly initiated by the company when a customer found a placebo tablet in a row of active tablets.

The birth control pills come in packages of 28 tablets – 21 with active ingredients, and 7 placebos. Normally, the placebos are the last row in the package, and are usually a different color than the rest of the pills so the customer knows which pill they are taking.

Only one report of the problem has come up so far, and Sandoz says that there were no reports of adverse side effects related to the placebo pill being out of place. They added that the likelihood of unintended pregnancy from taking one inactive pill out of place is extremely low.

“An internal medical assessment concludes that the probability of adverse health events is minimal, as the packaging flaw is easily visible and the risk of pregnancy occurring after non-administration of 1 blue tablet is low,” the company said.

The product recall is effective only for the US. The lot number is LF01213A .

If you currently take Sandoz’s Estarylla birth control and have questions or concerns about the product recall, you can contact the manufacturer at the Sandoz Drug Information Direct Line at 1-800-525-2492 or contact them by email at [email protected].

Any adverse effects related to the product recall should be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch line, by telephone at 1-800-FDA-1088; by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178; online athttps://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/medwatch-online.htm; with postage-paid FDA form 3500, available at http://www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm; or by mail to MedWatch, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, Maryland 20852-9787.

Litigation Against Defective Birth Control and Improper Product Recalls

Birth control medications were established in the 1960’s.  Since that time, there have only been four main types of progestin used. However, because the progestin is new, there is not a lot of information to support claims that the hormone is safe when used in combination with estrogen to prevent pregnancy.

Birth control uses chemicals similar to the female body’s hormones to help prevent pregnancy, but the drugs walk a fine line between ineffectiveness and terrible side effects. Drug recalls for other forms of birth control including Yaz hormone pills and Mirena IUD’s have led to personal injury lawsuits, as the companies did not recognize consumer complaints quickly enough.

Consumers that have been harmed by defective products such as drugs, medical devices, or other products, may be eligible to receive legal remedies. Such legal remedies, or damages, may include compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, loss of physical capacity, pain, suffering, and mental anguish. Punitive damages are also available in many jurisdictions to punish defendants in those cases involving particularly egregious conduct which demonstrates a reckless or wanton disregard for the safety of the public.
