SC Woman Arrested on Illegal Gambling and Drug Charges After Neighbors Complained

SC Woman receives criminal and drug charges for gambling and drugs in her home

Woman’s Home Investigated After Marijuana and Drug Charges, 9 Gambling Machines Seized

A Columbia, SC woman was arrested on December 7th after neighbors complained of drug-related activity. Police investigated her home on the basis of drug charges but found an illegal gambling operation in the woman’s home as well.

The incident report from the Columbia Police Department states that the home on Mt. Vernon St. smelled strongly of marijuana. Upon arrival, the officer asked if he could search the home, and the owner, Lillian Johnson, invited him in.

When the officer investigated the home, he found marijuana in the owner’s closet. However, he also found several gambling machines in plain view.

There were six gambling machines in the bedroom and three in the dining room.

After Drug Charges Proven, Gambling Machines Discovered

Johnson stated that, although the machines were in her house, she did not own them. However, she was operating them out of her home for cash. She informed the police that another person came by the residence regularly to check on the machines. She did have a key to all of the machines’ locks, so she could retrieve the money inside.

She also had a small amount of cash in her purse, which she informed officers present was to pay people who won at the machines.

Johnson, 51, was arrested on gambling charges and simple possession of marijuana. She was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Jennifer Timmons, the spokeswoman for the Columbia Police Department, said officers will continue to investigate the potential drug and gambling ring.
