Toyota Fire Probe Now Includes 1.4 Million Vehicles

Toyota Fire Probe

The Associated Press released a statement today saying that the government has added 600,000 Toyota Camry’s and other vehicles to an investigation of fires in power window switches.

The investigation now includes more than 1.4 million cars and SUVs.Toyota Fire Probe

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that the probe now covers Toyota Camrys from the 2008 and 2009 model years. The investigation first began in February with 2007 Camrys and RAV4 SUVs, for a total of 800,000 vehicles. However, they noted that, because Toyota uses the same parts in several different vehicles, the NHTSA could expand the investigation to include many other models.

Also included in the investigation are some 2007 to 2009 Yaris subcompacts and all 2008 Highlander Hybrid SUVs.

The report says power window switches in the driver’s side doors can overheat and catch on fire causing severe damage. The associated press said the Toyota Fire Probe problem has started 161 fires and nine injuries. The vehicles have not been recalled.

Right now the Toyota Camry is the top-selling car in the nation.

The Toyota Camry is not the only vehicle being investigated for potential fire hazards. Several vehicles are recalled every week due to potential or reported safety hazards involving fuel injector caps, fuel line leaks, power steering problems, and many more. Normally, manufacturers pay close attention to reports from dealers and consumers, and will quickly recall vehicles that display defects. However, manufacturers do not always catch problems, and sometimes intentionally neglect defective products.
