Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Stats from the CDC

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Stats from the CDCTraumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a common injury in the United States and many are at risk. Young children and older adults especially should be careful and cared for to prevent falls. Boys are much more likely than girls to get concussions.

It is possible that the best way to prevent yourself from dying from a TBI is by wearing your seatbelt and driving carefully — car accidents are the number one cause of death by traumatic brain injury. The following numbers were gathered from various documents available on the CDC website.

In the US:

• 1.7 million people have TBI per year
• 52,000 die
• 275,000 are hospitalized
• 1.365 million are treated at the ER

• TBI contributes to 30% of all injury-related deaths
• 75% of TBIs are concussions
•Medical cost of TBI was $60 billion in 2000

Most likely to get TBI:

• 0 to 4 years
• 15 to 19 years
• 65 years and older

• Half a million ER visits per year for those 0 to 14 years old
• Those over 75 most likely to be hospitalized or die from TBI

• Men more likely than women to get TBI
• Falls are the leading cause of TBI
• Motor vehicle–traffic injury is the leading cause of TBI-related death.

The leading causes of TBI are:

• Falls (35.2%);
• Motor vehicle – traffic (17.3%);
• Struck by/against events (16.5%); and
• Assaults (10%)

• Falls cause half of the TBIs among children aged 0 to 14 years
• 61% of all TBIs among adults aged 65 years and older.

The CDC also provides a lot of good information about the nature of brain injuries and concussions, particularly those that come from sports.  Brain injuries are serious, even mild ones can lead to lasting damage and it is important to understand the nature of concussions in case you or a family member ever has one.
