Tranvaginal Mesh (TVM) Could Lead to Autoimmune Disease Risks

Transvaginal Mesh (TVM) Lawsuit

What are autoimmune diseases?

Our immune system is a complex network of special cells and organs that defends the body from germs and other foreign invaders. At the core of the immune system is the ability to tell the difference between self and nonself: what’s you, and what’s foreign. The body can sometimes view transvaginal mesh, or TVM, as a foreign object inside a woman’s body. When this happens, the body makes autoantibodies that attack normal cells by mistake. At the same time, special cells called regulatory T-cells fail to do their job of keeping the immune system in line. The result is a misguided attack on your own body. This causes the damage we know as autoimmune disease. The body parts that are affected depend on the type of autoimmune disease.

Vaginal mesh is usually made of a stretchy synthetic material. The device has frequently been used to treat conditions like stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse by supporting internal organs that have slumped down into the vagina. Women filing the lawsuits say they have faced years of pain due to complications from the mesh.

The pain is caused when bits of the mesh break off, travel through the body, and scrape against organs and tissue during sex or everyday movement.

How do I find out if I have an autoimmune disease?

Getting a diagnosis can be a long and stressful process. Don’t give up if you’re not getting any answers. You can take these steps to help find out the cause of your symptoms:

  • Write down a complete family health history that includes extended family and share it with your doctor.
  • Record any symptoms you have, even if they seem unrelated, and share it with your doctor.
  • See a specialist who has experience dealing with your most major symptom or symptoms. For instance, if you have symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease, start with a gastroenterologist. Ask your regular doctor, friends, and others for suggestions.

 What is transvaginal mesh?

More than 75,000 women received transvaginal mesh implants last year to strengthen weak pelvic muscles that fail to support internal organs. Patients claimed the transvaginal mesh surgeries led to internal injuries. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the transvaginal mesh makers.

Some doctors would like to see a registry to follow patients who already have implants. In addition, more clinical trials are needed to establish whether the benefits of the device outweigh the risks.
