Choosing the right transvaginal mesh revision surgeon

• 50% of women find the mesh is often impossible to remove altogether as it was partially absorbed
• Complications of TVM for posterior repair (rectal prolapse) outweigh the reward
• Surgery to implant TVM has a higher incidence of 2nd surgery than any other vaginal operation
• Incontinence post-TVM surgery is more frequent than with traditional methods

Your Transvaginal Mesh Removal Surgery

A study presented at the annual meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons looked at 19 women who had undergone transvaginal mesh removal. Most of the patients reported mesh erosion, recurrent pelvic prolapse, chronic pain, and sexual dysfunction as the reasons for removal.

Surgeons need to carefully remove the surrounding tissue before removing the mesh. This usually involves cutting out the mesh and surrounding tissue and then stitching the area closed.

Choosing a Surgeon:

Before choosing a surgeon for your transvaginal mesh removal, ask yourself these questions:

• Are you comfortable talking to your doctor?
  No matter how well qualified your doctor may be, you won’t have a high-quality experience if you can’t effectively relay your concerns or worries. Some patients need more attention and will need a doctor willing and able to spend time discussing their concerns. Your TVM surgeon should be able to answer all of your questions adequately.
• Does he answer all of your questions?
  Do you feel like your doctor answers all your questions? Does he or she relay information in a way that you understand? Do you feel comfortable asking all your questions, even the most personal ones? If you call your doctor’s office, do they respond in a timely manner?
• Does your doctor perform this procedure regularly?
  Ask your doctor how often he or she performs transvaginal mesh revision surgery. You don’t want an inexperienced surgeon.
• Is your doctor located in a place you can get to?
  It is tempting for some people to fly off to have their surgery done by the most popular transvaginal mesh doctor in the field. But often, the wiser decision is to have a qualified local doctor perform your mesh removal surgery.
