Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Recalls Batches of Liquid Acetaminophen Meant for Infants
On Friday, November 1st, pharmaceutical manufacturer Perrigo issued a drug recall for 18 batches of liquid acetaminophen, which was made for infants.
The generic version of Tylenol, which uses the active ingredient acetaminophen, is indicated for use as a pain and fever reliever, and can be used in children, infants, and adults.
The national store brand said it is recalling the acetaminophen because some packages may contain an oral dosing syringe without dosage markings, making accurate dosing more difficult.
Acetaminophen based drugs, especially Tylenol, have come under scrutiny recently from consumer groups and the FDA, because it is very easy for a patient to overdose on the drug.
The Perrigo Company makes generic, store brand products like the liquid acetaminophen for many popular chains, including Babies R Us, Target (as Up & Up), Rite Aid, and Walmart (as Equate). The batches under recall are 160 mg/5 mL sizes, sold in 2 and 4 ounce bottles with syringes. The syringes will have a white or yellow plunger, and should have 1.25, 2.5, 3.75 and 5 mL (millileters) dose markings on the side. If your product has these markings, the pharmaceutical manufacturer says that you can continue to use these products safely.
“There are no issues or concerns with respect to the safety or efficacy of the product, only the potential that the oral dosing device in a relatively small number of packages could be unmarked,” said Perrigo CEO Joseph C. Papa in the release.
There have been no complaints or reported complications due to acetaminophen overdose.
If you have experienced an adverse event related to the use of the medication, contact the FDA’s MedWatch program online or call 1-800-332-1088.
Tylenol and Acetaminophen Personal Injury Cases
Research shows that Tylenol® causes a variety of side effects and may increase the risk of liver failure and other serious health complications in otherwise healthy people prescribed the Acetaminophen pain reliever. Specifically, Tylenol® and other Acetaminophen products have been shown to increase the risk of liver problems, including liver damage and/or liver failure. These products have been sold for years with inadequate warning and instructions, which could have reduced or prevented the risk of serious and potentially life-threatening injury.
Have you experienced any of the following symptoms within a week of ingesting Tylenol® Acetaminophen products:
- Hospitalization resulting from severe liver injury or liver problems
- Liver failure
- Liver transplant or being placed on the transplant list
- Possible death or loss of life from liver failure
