More Blue Cheese Under Food Recall for Salmonella

Georgia Company Issues Food Recall for Blue Cheese for Possible Salmonella Contamination

blue cheeseFlat Creek Farm & Dairy, based in Swainsboro, Georgia, has issued a food recall for some of their blue cheese products after the Georgia Department of Agriculture revealed possible salmonella contamination in the manufacturing process.

The food recall covers Heavenly Blue Cheese lot code 130916XHB, as well as Aztec Cheddar cheese of lot code 130823XAZ. The affected cheeses were sold through distributors in Georgia and Florida, as well as through online orders on the Flat Creek Dairy website.

The food recall covers 90 pounds of blue cheese, and 78 pounds of cheddar. Flat Creek is in the process of notifying all purchasers, both retail and consumer.

No illnesses have been reported due to salmonella infection. However, consumers are urged to return the product to the place of purchase and get a refund. Consumers are also encouraged to contact Flat Creek with any questions or concerns about the food recall, 478-237-0123 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. for more information.

Last month, the manufacturer issued a food recall for 200 lbs of blue cheese, also due to a potential salmonella contamination in the manufacturing process. Flat Creek stated that as of November 27th, 90% of the product under the food recall had been collected and destroyed. No illnesses have been associated with the salmonella food recall so far.

Salmonella enteritidis can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people who have weakened immune systems, such as children or elderly adults. Healthy individuals could suffer short-term side effects from the organism, including fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and/or diarrhea. Long-term complications of this salmonella infection can include arthritis.

Food Recall Notice May or May Not Be In Time to Stop Contagion

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products, foods, and medications have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers. The USDA monitors food safety and potential contamination. However, these agencies act only after they hear reports of potential contamination, either from the manufacturer, or from consumers. By the time consumer reports of illness or injury make their way to these federal agencies, it may be too late to stop harm done with a product or food recall.

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products and foods. A personal injury lawyer can help you with an injury you may receive. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, and other defective products such as toys, cars, food, medication, and automotive parts.
