Colorado Meat Producer Issues Food Recall for ‘Insanitary Conditions’

USDA Issues Food Recall for 90,000 Lbs of Meat Reportedly Processed in ‘Insanitary Conditions’

insanitary conditionsOn Monday, December 9th, the US Department of Agriculture announced that Yauk’s Specialty Meats, based in Windsor, CO, had issued a food recall for 90,000 pounds of meat and poultry products that were produced in insanitary conditions.

The following products are subject to recall:

  • “Colorado Best Beef” brand various fresh, smoked and shelf-stable meat products.
  • “James Ranch” brand jerky and summer sausage.
  • “Rocky Plains Meats” brand hams, bacon, raw and smoked sausage, jerky and raw poultry.
  • “John Long Farms” brand fresh and smoked pork products.
  • “Horned Beef” brand jerky.
  • “Mile High Hungarian Sausage” brand fresh and smoked bacon and sausage.

Products subject to the food recall were packaged in retail-ready packaging in a variety of sizes. Each package has an establishment number, either “Est. 20309” or “P-20309,” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The meat products were produced between April 1st and December 5th of this year, and were reportedly sold at retail stores in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) began an inspection of the Colorado plant on December 5th, and reported that the products were being produced in unsanitary conditions, including rodent activity in the production, storage, and retail areas of the property. The food recall investigation is ongoing, according to the FSIS.

There have been no reports of illness due to consumption of these products.

Food Recall Notice May or May Not Be In Time to Stop Contagion

To protect yourself and your family, it’s important to know what products, foods, and medications have been recalled because they are defective or unsafe. Federal agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) frequently issue recalls for medical devices, drugs, and products that may be harmful to consumers. The USDA monitors food safety and potential contamination. However, these agencies act only after they hear reports of potential contamination, either from the manufacturer, or from consumers. By the time consumer reports of illness or injury make their way to these federal agencies, it may be too late to stop harm done with a product or food recall.

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products and foods. A personal injury lawyer can help you with an injury you may receive. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, and other defective products such as toys, cars, food, medication, and automotive parts.
