Drug Recall for Allergy Medication Mix-Up

Indian Manufacturer Issues Voluntary Drug Recall When Wrong Pill Found in Bottle

drug recallIndian pharmaceutical manufacturer Zydus Cadila has issued a voluntary drug recall after a hypertension medication was found mixed into a bottle of allergy medication.

Generic pharmaceutical manufacturers in India have issued several drug recalls over the last few months, raising concerns in the US about manufacturing quality in the country.

This latest drug recall is, according to the Food and Drug Administration, a Class II recall, which means the problem is not immediately life-threatening to all consumers. Zydus noted the presence of a foreign tablet – atenolol, 25 mg – mixed into generic allergy medication, promethazine, 25 mg. The allergy meds are Lot number MN9081, with an expiration date of September 2015. The bottles contain 100 pills.  No injuries have yet been reported.

Promethazine HCl is designed to treat allergic reactions to blood or plasma, uncomplicated allergic conditions of the immediate type where oral therapy is impossible or contraindicated, and as an adjunct in anaphylaxis. The drug can also treat motion sickness and perioperative nausea and vomiting in children and adults.

Atenolol is a generic drug used to treat cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure and angina (chest pain). It is a beta blocker that may lower the risk of repeated heart attacks.

Drug Recalls and Personal Injury

Did you know that every year approximately 200,000 Americans die from prescription drug reactions? While the U.S. government pours billions of dollars into illegal drug interdiction every year, more Americans die from legal, prescription drugs than illegal ones.

Every year, thousands of consumers sustain serious injuries from defective products. A defective product lawyer can help you with an injury you may receive. Many of these injuries could be avoided if the manufacturers or distributors of these products took additional steps to ensure consumer safety. Defective products that commonly cause injuries include medical devices, pharmaceutical products, and other defective products such as toys, cars and automotive parts.

There are a number of reasons that defective products make it to our shelves:

  • Defective manufacturing
  • Inadequate testing
  • Design defects
  • Marketing Misrepresentation

Consumers that have been harmed by defective products such as drugs, medical devices, or other products, may be eligible to receive legal remedies. Such legal remedies, or damages, may include compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, loss of physical capacity, pain, suffering, and mental anguish. Punitive damages are also available in many jurisdictions to punish defendants in those cases involving particularly egregious conduct which demonstrates a reckless or wanton disregard for the safety of the public.
