Fosamax Linked to Sudden Femur Fractures
The leading osteoporosis drug Fosamax that was supposed to strengthen bones has been linked to sudden femur breaks in patients taking the medication.
The popular drug is usually given to patients who need to reduce bone fractures and build up bone mass.
However, the medication which is also used to treat osteoporosis has been linked to a serious bone disease.
Fosamax is a bisphosphonate produced by the company Merck. Many reports have linked Fosamax to sudden femur fractures, the majority of which happened during low-energy activities, such as walking down stairs.
The unusual fractures have been called the “frozen bone” by Dr. Merck and Co Inc, the manufacturers of the drug, and denied a link between the drug and the fractures.
Other Serious Side Effects Associated with Fosamax
- Gastrointestinal tract: ulcers in the esophagus; this will more than likely require hospitalization and exhaustive treatment.
- Osteonecrosis of the Jaw – Corrosion of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) may occur while on this drug, if dental work of any kind is carried out.
- Neurological: instances of auditory hallucinations and visual disturbances are pretty rare, but have been associated with alendronate and other bisphosphonates.
- Skin rashes have also been reported
