Top Travel Critics Love Charleston, South Carolina

Two travel enthusiasts say the Charleston, SC area is the place to be.

American Express Travel put together a food and wine itinerary for those planning a trip to Charleston.

Downtown Charleston and the Historic District

American Express Travel recommends staying in Downtown Charleston. The company states, “Downtown Charleston is where you’ll find several boutique hotels and luxury properties with amenities such as rooftop pools, gourmet dining options, and world-class spas.”

What to do while you are in Charleston

American Express Travel recommends exploring the waterways of Folly Beach. The company states Folly Beach is a place for outdoor enthusiasts. According to American Express Travel, while kayaking through the waterways, you may see osprey, oystercatchers, dolphins and a wide variety of marine wildlife.

Dr. Beach recommends another Charleston beach, Beachwalker Park, on Kiawah Island. Each year Dr. Beach releases his list of best beaches in the US. Dr. Beach is a coastal expert and professor at Florida International University.  He ranks the beaches in his list on 50 criteria including the local scene, sand quality, water quality, smell and environmental management. Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island ranked in at #9 on the list.

Kiawah Island is just outside of Charleston. Kiawah is home to resorts, spas and many world-class golf courses. The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island recently was home to the 94th PGA Championship and was expected to bring the state over $92 million in revenue.

American Express Travel also recommends visiting the Charleston Tea Plantation. The Charleston Tea Plantation is the only tea garden in North America. Another place of interest is the Firefly Distillery located on Wadmalaw Island. Firefly is famous for their sweet tea vodka.

If shopping is more your speed, American Express Travel recommends visiting Charleston’s Historic City Market. The Historic City Market was originally as a slave trading ground. Today at the market, you will find Gullah handicrafts, sweetgrass baskets and benne wafers.

A Foodie’s Guide to Charleston

If you consider yourself a “foodie” then Charleston is the place for you. Charleston is famous for its southern cooking. American Express Travel recommends dining at McCrady’s. McCrady’s is located on the National Register of Historic Places and Landmarks. McCrady’s features a Chef Tasting Menu using local ingredients and drinks from the pre-Prohibition era on their cocktail menu.

If you are in the mood for barbecue American Express Travel recommends trying Melvin’s BBQ. The company calls Melvin’s “a South Carolina tradition since 1939”. The sauce is a mustard-base sauce and according to American Express Travel is a “must-try for barbeque enthusiast”. The restaurant also features St. Louis-style pork ribs, chicken, and “All Ham” Bar-B-Que.
