General Motors is issuing a recall affecting approximately 6,159 of its vehicles. The affected vehicles include Chevrolet Express, Suburban, GMC Savanna, and Yukon XL heavy-duty vehicles. The recall is due to a steering defect. The recall notice states that the steering gear pitman shaft in certain 2012 vehicles may have been inadequately hardened and could fracture. Fracturing could cause a loss of steering control and vehicle control, resulting in catastrophic or fatal accidents.
The recall should be in progress. If you own one of the General Motors vehicles subject to recall, you may take the vehicle to a dealer, where inspection and necessary fixes will be done free of charge. For questions, you may contact NHTSA directly at 1-888-327-4236 and reference safety No. 12055.
