An Orangeburg County jury has awarded $18 million to former South Carolina State University football player and his wife, in a landmark case against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The jury found that the NCAA was negligent for failing to warn players about the long-term effects of concussions sustained while playing football.
A Historic Verdict for Accountability and Player Safety
After nearly two hours of deliberation, the jury awarded $10 million to former athlete and $8 million to his wife, for loss of consortium.
He played as a defensive end for the S.C. State Bulldogs from 1977 to 1980, during which time repeated head impacts led to lasting neurological and health consequences.
This verdict stands as a powerful statement on the importance of protecting athletes and holding governing bodies accountable for player safety.
