Congratulations to federal district judge Mary G Lewis on her confirmation!
I was delighted to learn that my law school classmate, Mary G Lewis, was confirmed by the United States Senate on Monday by a vote of 64-27.
Mary is little lifelong resident of Columbia. She attended Clemson University graduating cum laude and received her juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina school of Law in 1984. She clerked for South Carolina judge Owens T Cobb, Jr. before joining Lewis& Babcock LLP in 1985.
As I told the FBI during her background investigation, I have known Mary for 30 years as a student, fellow law clerk and practicing attorney. I have been both co-counsel and opposing counsel to her firm and have nothing but positive comments about her intellect, professionalism, work ethic and demeanor. I am satisfied that she will be an excellent jurist.
On behalf of all the attorneys in the state, I would like to thank Congressman Clyburn and Sen. Graham for working together to achieve this confirmation. Our state has had a long-standing tradition of the appointment of high quality federal judges. Sen. Thurmond and Sen. Hollings started the tradition of nonpartisan cooperation in the selection of our federal judges and we are blessed that our current leadership continues to rise above politics and appoint the most qualified.
