LaFamilia Drug Cartel Arrests Extend to South Carolina

According to the State Newspaper, Federal Authorities are reporting that 14 people have been arrested in South Carolina as part of the largest single strike at Mexican drug operations in the United States.

Over the past 44 months, Project Coronado has targeted La Familia, a drug-trafficking cartel based in the state of Michoacan in southwestern Mexico. La Familia is the newest and most violent Mexican cartel.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald said Thursday the defendants will be detained until a hearing next Tuesday in federal court in Charleston. Nationally, more than 300 arrests were made this week.

Over the past two days, more than 3,000 federal agents and police officers carried out arrests in more than a dozen states, as part of a long-running anti-drug operation that has netted approximately 1,186 arrests over the course of Project Coronado.

McDonald says authorities searching three homes and a storage facility in southern South Carolina also confiscated drug paraphernalia, a gun, and $30,000 in cash, as well methamphetamine, crack and powdered cocaine.

The officials said states where arrests were made or charges filed include California, Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington state. As part of the arrests, more than 3.4 million dollars, 730 pounds of methamphetamine, and 400 weapons were seized.
