IVC Filter & SGLT2 Inhibitor Lawyers

IVC Filter and SGLT2 Inhibitor Lawsuits

The Strom Law Firm, L.L.C. is currently investigating and evaluating potential claims on behalf of patients who have suffered complications after the placement of an IVC Filter.

The Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter is a medical device that a surgeon implants inside the body to capture a blood clot(s) before it enters the lungs and prevent a pulmonary embolism. An IVC filter may be permanent or retrievable (removable). An IVC filter is often placed when a patient is unable to take a blood thinner, or the use of a blood thinner has been unsuccessful.

Generally, a temporary filter is removed after the risk for an embolism passes.  If the temporary IVC filters is not removed, the patient may be at risk of life-threatening complications including: filter fracture, migration, perforation, blood clots, and death. If you or someone you love suffered any one of the above injuries after using a IVC Filter, you could be entitled to compensation. Give us a call today for a free consultation.

Other SGLT2 Lawsuits

Sodium-glucose co-transporter (SGLT2) inhibitors are prescription medications designed to lower blood sugar levels for type 2 diabetics.  The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved the medications which work by forcing the kidneys to eliminate sugar from the body through the urine.

Some common SGLT2 inhibitors include:

  • Invokana;
  • Jardiance;
  • Farxiga;
  • Xigduo XR;
  • Glyxambi; and
  • Invokamet.

FDA Investigation and Safety Report

According to the FDA, SGLT2 inhibitors have led to some diabetics lapsing into ketoacidosis, a serious condition where there is too much acid in the blood that can lead to a diabetic coma.

The FDA issued a Safety Warning advising patients to watch out for symptoms including:

  • difficulty breathing,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • abdominal pain,
  • confusion, and
  • unusual fatigue or sleepiness.

IVC Filter Dangers

When an IVC filter does not work correctly or malfunctions while inside the patient, a IVC filter patient may experience serious and potentially fatal injuries, including chronic chest or heart pain, pulmonary embolism, respiratory problems and even death.

Current lawsuits contend that a manufacturing defect causes the filters to malfunction, which may result in severe problems and injuries including:

  • IVF filter frature,
  • Hemorrhage or internal bleeding
  • Chronic, excruciating pain in the chest or heart
  • Cardiac/pericardial tamponade
  • Perforation of, or damage to, vital tissue, vessels or organs
  • Death

Risk for IVC Filters

Doctors use IVC filters for patients who have a history or risk of developing blood clots in the legs or pelvis.

Other common reasons a temporary IVC filter may be implanted include:

  • immobility
  • deep vein thrombosis,
  • recent trauma,
  • surgery recovery
  • or pulmonary embolism.

IVC Filter Problems

The FDA reports that approximately 100,000 IVC filters have been implanted since the 1960’s. Originally, the filters were not intended for permanent use.  Manufacturers made the devices retrievable, therefore surgeons could remove the devices when they were no longer needed.  In August 2010, the FDA issued a warning against leaving IVC filters in patients for extended periods due to their potential to cause severe health complications.  The FDA now recommends that physicians “consider removing the filter as soon as protection from pulmonary embolism is no longer needed.”

What Our Clients Say

They truly care
Mrs Vallery, who answered the phone took more care and attention to detail than any other law office, that I have called, in 2 years+. She diligently took notes to give to the lawyers and cared about my situation and let me actually tell everything without cutting me short. Out of over 100 law offices, this is rare treatment. Care. Consideration. That means more than anything going through this…
