In fact, patients taking Pradaxa, have a 33% higher risk of suffering a heart attack or severe symptoms of heart disease than patients who are on Warfarin, another drug prescribed by doctors use to treat patients at risk of stroke from blood clotting, according to a study performed by the Cleveland Clinic. In many cases, negative side effects may not be perceived as tied to the drug until more serious complications, such as internal bleeding, occur.
German pharmaceutical manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim reported in 2014 that the company faces more than 2,000 lawsuits in the United States in relation to its stroke prevention medication, Pradaxa, because the drug reportedly caused severe and even fatal bleeding. The company stated that it knew about the dangerous side effect of its blockbuster drug, but that it had to weigh the potential life-saving benefits against the harm.
On July 23, 2014, the British Medical Journal found that the risk for major adverse bleeding while taking the Pradaxa could be significantly reduced with regular blood plasma level monitoring. The study stated: “if the plasma levels of the drug were measured and the dose was adjusted accordingly, major bleeds could be reduced by 30-40% compared with well controlled warfarin.” A few years earlier, the European Medicines Agency reported more than 250 cases of serious and sometimes fatal bleeding associated with the use of this drug.
