Recent research has suggested that certain injectible diabetes medications like Januvia ®, Janumet ®, Byetta ®, Bydureon® and Victoza ® may potentially be linked to an increased risk in pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis when compared to other diabetic treatment therapies.
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) released a Perspective report on GLP-1 Agents for Diabetes April 18, 2013. The ISMP monitors FDA MedWatch reports focused on five types of widely used drug therapies to treat type 2 diabetes. These include Byetta®, Victoza® and Januvia ®. Over 12 months, ISMP found adverse drug effects and therefore are calling for stronger alerts when prescribing the information and requiring studies on long-term effects of the treatment drugs in association with both thyroid and pancreatic cancers.
In March, the FDA requested additional information from researchers who found a suggested increased risk of pancreatitis and pre-cancerous cellular changes in those treated with a class of drug called incretin mimetics, including drugs like Byetta®, Byrduren®, Victoza®, Januvia® and Janumet ®.
