Violent Crime Stats out for SC as Summer Crime Rises

Warm Weather Leads to More Violent Crimes, as FBI Releases SC’s Violent Crime Stats

violent crimesEvery day innocent victims of violent crimes are injured and even killed because of criminal activity, and crime tends to rise with warmer, nicer weather. The days are longer, and more people are outside, from tourists to criminals. Whether due in part to the heat, or increased activity,  the commission of violent crimes also rises during the summer.  Violent crime statistics include everything from armed robbery, aggravated assault, rape, arson, and murder.

According to the FBI, which recently released violent crime statistics for South Carolina for 2013, Columbia – the state’s capital – had the most violent crimes during the year, with 952 reported. North Charleston came in second place, with 693 violent crimes reported. However, North Charleston had the highest incidence of murders reported specifically, with 13 in 2013.

Spartanburg came in third, with 527 violent crimes reported, while Myrtle Beach – a popular tourist destination – ranked fourth, with 475 violent crimes.

As the weather gets nicer and the potential for more crimes, including violent crimes, rises, the Myrtle Beach police department offer suggestions to help avoid these incidents, especially thefts and muggings. Be sure that any valuable items like smart phones and wallets are hidden if left in vehicles, or just take them with you.

“Also, while you’re on the beach, make sure if you take your keys and your wallet with you in a beach bag, make sure you have someone that’s watching the beach bag,” says Lt. Joey Crosby. “Because sometimes we do have people that take those bags off of the beach while you’re down at the ocean playing. So make sure you leave someone at your towel or your beach chairs to monitor your stuff.”

If you have serial numbers or identification numbers on any items, make sure to have them written down. This can help police identify your stolen items if they are recovered.

If you are out alone or at night, be aware of your surroundings. Stay in well-lit areas, and stay with people if possible. This can help protect you from becoming a victim of assault or robbery.
