Another superstar is facing charges of criminal domestic violence, and this time it isn’t Chris Brown.
Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson was arrested and charged with criminal domestic violence after allegedly head butting his wife this past weekend. Johnson, who once went by the name “Ochocinco” in honor of the No. 85 jersey he wore while playing in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals, was later released from a South Florida jail.
The 34 year old wide receiver recently moved to Miami following a trade to the Miami Dolphins. Johnson and reality-TV star/wife Evelyn Lozada were married on July 4 of this year.
A Fight over Condoms
The domestic dispute between Johnson and his wife reportedly stemmed Lozada finding a Walgreens receipt for condoms in the trunk of their car, as she was unloading shopping bags.
Lozada left the car with laceration on her head. Lozada said she ran to a neighbor’s house in fear of Johnson. Johnson then drove through the neighborhood looking for his wife. Lozada was able to hide at the neighbor’s house until police arrived. She was later treated at a local emergency for the 3 inch cut on her forehead.According to the police report, Johnson and Lozada were sitting inside their black Smart Car parked in the driveway of the home, when they began talking about the receipt and eventually their marriage. Johnson reportedly got upset and without Lozada’s permission grabbed her neck and head butted her. Johnson then began screaming profanities at her in a tirade.
Johnson was arrested and booked at the Broward County Jail. The athlete was released on Sunday after posting a $2,500 bail.
Johnson claims that the cut was his wife’s fault saying that yes, they argued, but that she was the one who struck him. Many times criminal domestic violence cases are hard to prosecute because, as in Johnson’s case, they read like a he-said, she-said.
Following the incident, Johnson was released from the Miami Dolphins. Johnson and his wife were set to star in their own reality show on VH1 called “Ev & Ocho” which has since been cancelled. VH1 issued a statement regarding their decision to pull the show stating, “Due to the unfortunate events of the weekend and the seriousness of the allegations, VH1 is pulling the series ‘Ev and Ocho’ from its schedule and has no current plans of airing it.”
