Zoloft Heart Defects
Zoloft (sertraline hydrochloride) was approved by the FDA and introduced into the market in 1991. In December 2005, the FDA issued a public health advisory stating that certain antidepressants taken during the first trimester of pregnancy could correlate to an increased risk of birth defects.
Studies by the New England Journal of Medicine have found that Zoloft can increase the risk of serious heart defects when women take the drug during pregnancy. Pregnant women taking this medicine are six times more likely to give birth to a child with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). The study also states women are twice as likely to give birth to a child with septal defects or ventricular outflow tract defects.
Despite a number of studies linking Zoloft to severe birth defects, the FDA says they have no plans to recall the drug. Patients who gave birth to a child with heart defects or other side effects may be eligible to file a lawsuit.
Zoloft lawsuits claim that the drug makers failed to adequately research the effect of the drug when used during pregnancy. The lawsuit also claims that the company did not provide adequate warnings to consumers or the medical community that using the drug during pregnancy may leave children with serious and potentially fatal health problems.
How to File a Zoloft Claim
If you or someone you love took Zoloft and suffered a birth defect or malformation, you could be entitled to compensation because the injuries may have been prevented if adequate warnings had been provided about the risk associated with using Zoloft during pregnancy.
