One of the world’s leading innovative companies in crop protection, Bayer Crop Science, has agreed to pay $50 million to settle several lawsuits with U.S. farmers.
The plaintiffs claimed a strain of Bayer’s unapproved modified rice polluted the food supply and hurt their crop prices.
The lawsuit goes back to 2006 where the company released information saying its experimental strain of Liberty Link GMO rice was found in U.S. food supplies.
Thankfully, no human health problems have been associated with the contamination.
Farmers from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas sued Bayer, claiming the industrial accident closed off critical export markets and caused the price of rice to drop.
The settlement includes farmers that planted rice between 2006 and 2010.
