4 Ways to Avoid Being a Victim of Auto Theft

South Carolina Lawyers

South Carolina City now ranks number 8 in the nation for auto theft.

Anderson, SC jumped from number 33 to number 8 on the “Hot Spots of 2011” a chart done by the National Insurance Crime Bureau highlighting the auto thefts across the nation. Auto thefts are on the rise not only in Anderson but around the country. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that a vehicle is stolen every 33 seconds.

So what can you do to protect yourself and your vehicle? Auto thefts can turn deadly. Knowing the right precautions to take can help you avoid being a victim of auto theft or any other crime that may ensue.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau recommends four steps to avoid being a victim of auto theft.

  1. Use Common Sense strategies. Basically, if it seems like a bad movie, it probably is. This includes removing your keys from the ignition, locking your doors and windows, and parking in well light areas.
  2. Use warning devices. These include car alarms, brake locks, and identification markers in or around the vehicle.Auto Theft
  3. Use immobilizing devices. These include smart keys, kill switches and starter, ignition, and fuel pump disablers.
  4. Use tracking devices on your vehicle. Tracking devices can include a GPS or wireless/remote monitoring service, like Onstar.
