DNA Evidence and Your Case
A substance that contains human DNA can be collected from a crime scene and tested to tie someone to a crime. This process, plays a major role in convicting, acquitting, or exonerating individuals accused of a crime.
What is DNA?
Deoxyribonucleic acid is a double helix of organic material contained within each cell of a person’s body. DNA is unique per every individual and evidence of it can make a direct link between a specific individual and a crime.
Common Types of DNA Evidence:
- Blood
- Saliva
- Skin cells
- Semen or vaginal secretions
- Hair (eyelashes, body hair, pubic hair, etc.)
Testing DNA Evidence: DNA Profiling
DNA is first sampled across a database of known offenders, who’s DNA is kept on file so they can be identified quickly if they repeat a crime. If no matches are found during this initial check, investigators will proceed to obtain subpoenas to collect DNA samples from case suspects. A simple mouth swab is all that’s needed for a suspect’s DNA.
A decisive match between a sample and a piece of DNA evidence must have identical strands, otherwise that suspect will be ruled out.
DNA Evidence to Clear Convicted Individuals
DNA testing can also be used to prove innocence, as over 190 people have been acquitted through the use of DNA testing.
