Roundup®, a popular weed killer manufactured by the Monsanto Company, is widely used by individual consumers, the farming community, landscapers, and groundskeepers for controlling weeds. Roundup works by inhibiting the growth of a specific enzyme in plants called EPSP synthase, which all plants need to grow. Without the enzyme, vegetation will wither and die.
Roundup®Manufacturer Monsanto Denies Cancer Link.
The IARC’s conclusion that glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, is carcinogenic is based on several studies of animal exposure in the US, Canada, and Sweden. These animal studies revealed an increase in tumor growth in mice when exposed to the chemical glyphosate. Monsanto continues to refute the findings by the IARC, claiming their independent review studies confirm Roundup® is safe. However, those affected in the agricultural community allege the independent studies were conducted to benefit Monsanto, who has continuously marketed Roundup® as environmentally safe and biodegradable. Their findings allege that there is no increased cancer risk to these workers even after prolonged exposure to the chemical.
While the two studies produce conflicting results, questions remain.
A number of Roundup® lawsuits are now pending which allege that use of, or exposure to, Roundup may result in the following serious health conditions:
- Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
- Renal Cell Carcinoma
- Pancreatic Islet Cell Tumors
- Cancer
- Skin Tumors
- DNA Damage
- Chromosomal Damage
Birth Defects and Roundup® Exposure
According to a study conducted in Paraguay, Roundup® has also been linked to an increase risk of potential birth defects. The Paraguay study concluded that babies born to mothers living within one kilometer of fields sprayed with glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup®, are twice as likely to be born with birth defects. The contention is that Roundup may increase the Vitamin A signaling pathway when the fetus is developing, disrupting certain genes, and resulting in a birth defect.
Disruption of the Vitamin A signaling pathway can result in the following birth defects:
- Neural Tube Defects
- Spina Bifida
- Microtia (abnormal ear)
- Cleft lip and palate
- Anencephaly
- Imperforate Anus
- Micro Penis
- Autism
Roundup®Lawsuits Filed Against Monsanto
Financial compensation may be available to victims who suffered life-altering serious health conditions after being exposed to Roundup®. A number of Roundup® lawsuits have been filed alleging that Monsanto failed to fairly or thoroughly research glyphosate and/or warn those potentially exposed about the risks. These lawsuits further allege Monsanto knew about the dangers of the chemical glycophate, and continued to manufacture and promote Roundup as safe.
The first Roundup lawsuit to go to trial resulted in a $289 million verdict
In August 2018, the first Roundup lawsuit to go to trial resulted in a $289 million verdict for former groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson. Mr. Johnson was allegedly diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after regularly using the herbicide at work.
